US universities usually have 3 Intakes

  • Spring: January
  • Fall: August
  • Summer: May

Main intakes are Fall and Spring, but a few universities have a Summer Intake.

Academic Eligibility


Bachelor's Degree: These are 4-year undergraduate programs. The minimum qualification for Bangladeshi students is

  • SSC or equivalent exam GPA 3.5+
  • HSC or equivalent exam GPA 3.5+
  • SAT/ACT is required for the top-ranked universities

Postgraduate/Master's Degree: The minimum qualification required for Bangladeshi students is

  • Graduation or equivalent exam CGPA 2.75+
  • IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, and TOEFL Certificate is required
  • GMAT or GRE is required for Business, Science, and Engineering programs at a top-ranked university

Master's/PHD Degree: The minimum qualification required for Bangladeshi students is

Undergraduate/Master's GPA:

  • Generally, a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) is expected, though competitive programs often look for a GPA above 3.5.

Standardized Tests (GRE/GMAT):

  • GRE/GMAT: Many programs, particularly in STEM and business, require GRE or GMAT scores, though some are test-optional.

Relevant Coursework:

  • Some programs have prerequisite courses, particularly in specialized or technical fields.

Research and Professional Background:

  • Research Experience: Research background is highly valued, especially for research-focused master’s programs. This can enhance eligibility for research assistantships.
  • Professional Experience: Professional experience, internships, or project-based work can make applications stand out and support your case for funding in practical or applied fields.


Application Materials for Funding

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): This should be tailored to highlight your career goals, research interests, and why you are a good fit for the program. Emphasize how the program and funding will support your contributions to your home country or field.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Provide three strong recommendation letters from professors or professionals who can vouch for your academic and research skills.
  • Research Proposal (if required): Some fellowships or assistantships may require a research proposal to assess your research potential.
  • CV/Resume: Highlight academic achievements, research experience, internships, projects, and other relevant skills or awards.


Application Timeline and Strategy

  • Start Early: Many funding opportunities have deadlines (up to a year before the program starts). Research and contact programs as soon as possible for information on international student funding.
  • Direct Contact with Departments: Contact faculty members or program coordinators in advance, especially if you’re interested in assistantships. Expressing a strong interest in specific faculty research areas can increase your chances of securing funding.
